Improving Employee Emotions and Emotion Regulation

Employee affect (i.e., emotion) has the capacity to influence a wide range of organizationally-valued outcomes, including performance, creativity, decision-making, group dynamics, turnover, and behavior. Organizational scholars have begun to evaluate the effectiveness of various strategies for making substantive improvements to employee emotional well-being and emotion regulation.
This webinar will explore the role employee affect plays in organizational life, and methods for improving emotional well-being in organizations. In particular, attention will paid to self-guided activities (e.g., gratitude journaling, practicing kindness) that can serve as an alternative (or complement to) organization-level efforts, and traditional person-focused initiatives such as stress management training.
At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:
Explain the relationship between employee emotional experiences and organizationally-valued outcomes
List several organization- and person-focused strategies for improving employee emotional experiences
Review research on the effectiveness of self-guiding emotion regulation strategies
Discuss opportunities for future research on employee affect and emotion regulation
Carolyn Winslow, Ph.D. is an industrial/organizational psychologist and researcher at Interdisciplinary Center for Healthy Workplaces at the University of California, Berkeley. Her program of research has focused on exploring ways of and enhancing employee well-being through the cultivation of positive feelings, behaviors, and cognitions, as well as through mitigation of the harmful effects of negative emotions and work stress. She has also conducted research on a variety of other organizational psychology topics, including diversity and inclusion, leadership, teams, job attitudes, and job performance. In her research, she uses a variety of methodological approaches, including experimental, meta-analytic, survey, and qualitative research designs to appropriately capture dynamic and complex phenomena occurring in organizations. Her applied experience includes development of assessments for organizations of various sizes in both the public and private sectors. She also has experience designing and evaluating performance management systems and health and stress management programs.
