Aerosol in the workplace has been and continues to be a significant occupational health concern. The inhalation and deposition of aerosol in a worker’s respiratory system can lead to various adverse health effects. This presentation will provide basic information on particle lung deposition, and explore the past, present, and future of aerosol respiratory deposition experiments using human airway replicas.

Describe the structure of the human respiratory tract
Identify dominant aerosol respiratory deposition mechanisms for different work-related aerosol
Review the traditional method to conduct aerosol respiratory deposition experiments
Dr. Wei-Chung Su is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental and Occupational Health Science program in the Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics and Environmental Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). He is also a faculty member in the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH). Dr. Su teaches several Industrial Hygiene core courses at UTHealth, and his research interests are centered on aerosol-related environmental and occupational health issues with a focus on aerosol respiratory deposition. Dr. Su is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a past chair of the Aerosol Technology Committee in the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Dr. Su received his Ph.D. degree from the School of Public Health, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
The Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) supports research, education and outreach in occupational and environmental health funded by Grant #T42OH008421. This ERC grant is under the leadership of David Gimeno, PhD and George Delclos, MD, MPH, PhD who serve as ERC Director and Deputy Director. The mission of the SWCOEH is to promote and improve health, safety, and well-being in the workplace and the community.
