Jet Fuel in the Drinking Water in Hawaii: An Environmental Health Catastrophe

About the webinar:

This presentation will describe the contamination of the Joint-Base Pearl Harbor Hickam drinking water system in Oahu, Hawaii in November 2021. Learners will explore details of the incident, including emergency response, environmental health impacts, ongoing issues, and lessons learned.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the November 2021 release of JP-5 jet fuel into the Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam Drinking Water System and the subsequent poisoning of thousands of people

  • Evaluate the massive emergency response, including key steps involved

  • Recognize the limitations of evaluating health impacts and the difficulty in predicting long-term health impacts

  • Review lessons learned and key takeaways from this environmental health disaster

Speaker: Diana Felton, MD

Diana Felton is the State Toxicologist for the Hawaii Department of Health. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and attended medical school at the University of California, Davis. Emergency Medicine Residency was done at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, and Toxicology Fellowship at the Harvard Medical Toxicology Program. She spent many years as an ER physician and toxicologist in Massachusetts and Hawaii before transitioning to state government work in 2018.
