10/13/2026: Industrial Ventilation Fundamentals for Industrial Hygienists

Industrial Ventilation Fundamentals for Industrial Hygienists

About the webinar:

The presentation opens with a brief review of the principles of industrial hygiene - which is important as without anticipation, recognition, and/or evaluation of hazards, it becomes challenging to successfully select and implement a control measure. The hierarchy of control measures will be addressed next as industrial ventilation may not be the best method of control exposure to the identified hazard. The remainder of the presentation will focus on pertinent industrial ventilation fundamentals that all industrial hygienists should understand to best protect against excessive exposures to hazardous substances. “Case studies” will be used to substantiate each identified objective.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of the proper anticipation, recognition, and/or evaluation of exposures to hazardous substances in the workplace

  • Discuss the hierarchy of controls and its importance in assuring the appropriate control measure has been selected and implemented to protect against excessive exposures to various hazards

  • Ensure the chosen system designer has been provided with the appropriate design basis, specifications, standards, and drawings to give them the necessary background to design the ventilation system

  • Identify the type of ventilation system will be used to control exposure to the identified hazard(s): general exhaust ventilation (GEV: dilution or displacement), local exhaust ventilation (LEV, or “industrial ventilation”), or a combination of the two, plus any necessary replacement or supply air system(s)

  • Explain the importance of obtaining ventilation system design calculation sheets, diagrams, and other pertinent documents.

  • Understand the properties of all airstreams to be moved through the ventilation system

  • Identify key design considerations for industrial ventilation systems, including airstream charac-
teristics, duct and fan configurations, design documentation, and system specifications

  • Implement a management of change system as well as a monitoring and maintenance program

Speaker: Gregg Grubb, BS, CIH

Gregg has closed his consulting business and is now primarily retired, only teaching for the University of Michigan COHSE Certified Industrial Hygiene Review (CIHR) course and the Michigan Industrial Ventilation Conference. He is currently focused on moving from the Detroit Metro region to Seattle Metro region.

ACCREDITATION

The Center for Occupational and Environmental Health designates this activity for a maximum of 1.0 Contact Hour. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Certificates of Completion

Certificates of Completion will be available to webinar participants who are present for the complete, live webinar, and logged in with their registered email address. Call-in attendees are not eligible for certificates at this time - Please download the Zoom app to log in via email on your smartphone whenever possible.

In order to receive your Certificate of Completion, qualified learners must complete the post-webinar evaluation within 7 days of the webinar. A link to the evaluation will be emailed to qualified learners 24 hours after the webinar via no-reply@zoom.us. Qualified learners who submit their evaluation will receive a Certificate of Completion via email, and can also print/save the certificate from their browser after submitting their evaluation.

If you're not able to attend the live presentation, no problem! We record most presentations and will host them on our website provided we have permission to do so. Presentation recordings are not eligible for Certificates of Completion.
