Measuring the Effect of a Powered Ankle Exoskeleton on Street Crossing Decisions for Novice Users Without Mobility Limitations

The purpose of this study was to extend powered ankle exoskeleton evaluations by using street crossing decisions as a method to understand the physical and cognitive effects of an exoskeleton on novice users without mobility limitations. Presented by Caleb Jeanniton, PhD.

Human Decision-Making in Autonomous Robotic Operations in High-Risk Environments

This presentation will cover research into how automated robots performing tasks in high-risk environments, such as in space and underwater, work with a human supervisor to perform important tasks such as docking and inspection.Presented by Hannah Larson, PhD.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Examine the role of simulation in evaluating human interactions with wearable exoskeletons and autonomous robotic systems
  • Identify how human, environmental, and system factors shape decision-making
  • Describe how wearable mobility devices and autonomous robots affect human physical, cognitive, and operational decision-making

Speaker: Caleb Jeanniton, PhD

Dr. Caleb Jeanniton is a Human Factors Scientist at Exponent specializing in human factors investigations of how individual, environmental, andtechnological factors influence decision making, attention, and mobility in traffic contexts. He has utilized his background in human factors to investigate emergent mobility technologies such as highly automated vehicles and wearable robotics, specifically characterizing their interactions with users’ perception, mental workload and situation awareness. He earned his B.S. in 2022 from Tufts University in Human Factors Engineering. Dr. Jeanniton earned his M.S. (2024) and Ph.D. (2026) in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Speaker: Hannah Larson, PhD

Dr. Hannah Larson received her bachelor›s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama in 2018 and her master’s and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2021 and 2025, respectively. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C.
