08/11/2026: When Home Becomes the Exposure Environment: A Multi-Layered Investigation to Minimize Airborne Molds

This webinar will present a case study examining indoor mold burden in a Cincinnati residence following respiratory complaints among occupants. Using a comprehensive multi-layered approach, we employed real-time aerosol monitoring alongside microscopic analysis to characterize fungal diversity and quantify exposure reductions. This case study demonstrates how layered controls and integrated monitoring can meaningfully reduce bioaerosol exposures in residential environments.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify air monitoring strategies to inform exposure assessment and control

  • Interpret environmental data to evaluate changes in fungal concentrations, dominanttaxa, and overall spore diversity using integrated monitoring tools

  • Describe how a multi-layered exposure-assessment strategy can be used to characterize indoor mold burden in a residential setting

Speaker: Judith Arthur, MSc

Judith Arthur is a third-year Ph.D. candidate in Industrial Hygiene at the University of Cincinnati, where she trains in aerosol and exposure science under Dr. Sripriya Nannu Shankar. Her research spans combustion simulations of secondhand smoke, evaluations of combined exposure control strategies, and investigations of bioaerosol transmission and mitigation, including MRSA.
