About the webinar:

This presentation will highlight several common injuries in workers' compensation clinics and provide a practical roadmap for optimizing outcomes while avoiding missed diagnoses that can lead to long-term disability. Shoulder, knee, and spinal conditions will be the primary focus of the discussion, with emphasis on recognizing red flags in the patient history, identifying key physical examination findings, and understanding appropriate timelines for advanced imaging and specialist referral. Case studies and tips for getting timely authorizations for care will be presented and discussed.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the key elements of the patient history that warrant further evaluation and how establishing a specific diagnosis facilitates timely specialist referral
  • Recognize clinical situations in which early consultation is needed and the potential consequences of delays in specialist referral
  • Identify “red flags” that require prompt referral to a specialist
  • Implement systems and documentation strategies to obtain authorization for advanced imaging and referrals, including the use of key terminology, ACOEM guidelines, and checklists to support the approval process

Speaker: Lesley Anderson, MD

Dr Anderson is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who has practiced in San Francisco for the past 42 years. She specialized in complex knee and shoulder surgery. She has recently retired from clinical practice. She has been involved in WC advocacy and education with insurers as well as her patients. She initiated the development of a “checklist system” with the COA to improve the authorization process and reduce denials. She is a past President of the California Orthopedic Association. She continues to be involved in performing IME and QME.

The Center for Occupational and Environmental Health designates this activity for a maximum of 1.0 Contact Hour. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
