About the Program

The UCSF Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) residency training program, established in 1977, addresses the vital regional need for well-trained physician specialists in occupational medicine. The program is a component of the California state-funded Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH), founded by the California legislature in response to an epidemic of toxicant-caused sterility in California workers involved in manufacturing the pesticide dibromochloropropane (DBCP). The COEH is the multi UC-campus entity within which the NIOSH-supported ERC is based. Since its founding, the UCSF OEM program has graduated over 100 physicians who work within and provide service in a variety of roles regionally and nationally.

Goals of the Program

The goal of the Division of Occupational, Environmental, and Climate Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco is to advance the field of occupational and environmental health through research, education, and service to patients and the community.
