OSHA’s presentation will introduce and expand the participants understanding of the history of OSHA ergonomics enforcement, how OSHA enforces ergonomics in workplaces where employees suffer significant musculoskeletal injuries, and how OSHA’s enforcement actions result in improved safety and health and ergonomics programs and reduced workplace hazards to employees. Case study examples will be presented. OSHA’s VPP and Safety Pays topics are also promoted and discussed.

Marc Vargas has over 28 years of experience in the field of Occupational Safety and Health. He started as a Safety Director in 1996 in Resource Recovery power plant industry where he oversaw heavy equipment installation and repair. Since 1997 Marc has worked for OSHA as a field office Safety and Industrial Hygienist Inspector, then for New York Region Tech Support involved with warehousing ergonomics investigation and enforcement, and now works for OSHA’s National Office of Health Enforcement specializing in assisting and administering ergonomics outreach and enforcement in OSHA field offices nationwide. He has investigated many industries and workplaces including a construction case with multiple fatalities and criminal prosecution of the company owner, infectious disease in hospitals, ergonomics in nursing homes, process safety management inspections in chemical manufacture, and was the lead investigator in the agency’s first ergonomics-related 5(a)(1) citation for baggage handlers in the airline industry.
The Center for Occupational and Environmental Health designates this activity for a maximum of 1.0 Contact Hour. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
