04/03/2024: Climate Change and Human Health: An Alaska Perspective

About the webinar:

Temperatures are rising 2 to 3 times faster in Alaska and throughout the circumpolar regions as a result of climate change. This presentation will explore the wide range of climate change’s impacts on the Alaskan ecosystem and address some of its impacts on the health of Alaskan people.

03/20/2024: Patient Handling Hazards and Prevention

About the webinar:

Manual patient handling tasks such as repositioning in bed, bed to chair transfers, and mobility assistance generate profound ergonomic stressors on healthcare workers, resulting in uniquely high rates of musculoskeletal injuries. Although effective equipment is available to prevent manual patient handling, it often goes unused. Join Dr. Kiydal to discuss how safe patient handling and mobility programs are systems-based solutions that can mitigate musculoskeletal risk when implemented comprehensively.

11/29/2023: The California Artificial Stone and Silicosis (CASS) Project

About the webinar:

This presentation will summarize the CASS Project. The overarching aim of this project is to promote respiratory health among vulnerable workers in California’s countertop fabrication industry through education, medical monitoring, and statewide enhanced surveillance. The overall hypothesis of this project is that a multifaceted public health intervention will increase compliance with silica regulations and the detection of silicosis in the contemporary workplaces of California’s countertop fabrication industry.

10/18/2023: Design and Safety: Sizing Considerations for Personal Protective Equipment

About the webinar:

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is a vital safety tool in many industries and workplaces. PPE can provide protection to the wearer in many ways, such as shielding the body from impact (i.e., helmets), making the body more visible (i.e., high-visibility clothing), changing the temperature of the body (i.e., moisture-wicking clothing), or even preventing internal exposure (i.e., respirators). Some workers, such as firefighters and astronauts, require very industry-specific protective equipment. Traditionally, PPE has been designed and sized for the average male body....

09/20/2023: Workplace Design Considerations for the Aging Workforce (and for all!)

About the webinar:

As people age, they may experience changes in physical abilities, sensory perception, and cognitive functions. They may also experience chronic pain. Demographic trends highlight the importance of designing workplaces that address the needs of an aging workforce, especially if an organization’s goals are to promote employee well-being, productivity, work retention, and reduce the risk of injuries. Drawing from a broad Total Worker Health® perspective and recent human factors / ergonomics publications, this presentation offers an overview of key workplace design...

09/12/2023: Community-Engaged Research: Increasing Occupational Health Equity Among Historically Marginalized Populations

About the webinar:

Community-engaged interventions that address structural/social dimensions of health and occupational health equity are lacking among low socioeconomic status and migrant workers, especially waterfront workers like fishermen and seafood processors. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a relational model that values participants as equal partners in research, dissemination, and implementation. CBPR, when applied to high-risk occupational settings with under-reached populations, can improve health and prevent injury. This presentation will detail the...

05/17/23: The Impact of Precarious Work and Psychosocial Stress on Physical and Mental Health of California Janitors

About the webinar:

Janitors are essential workers, employed as caretakers of public spaces like business offices, airports, and shopping malls. Despite playing a critical role in the economy, janitors are some of the most vulnerable workers in the service industry. Often immigrants and non-English speakers, they make relatively low wages while performing physically demanding work, which is associated with the development of musculoskeletal disorders. This webinar presents a cross-sectional survey study of Californian janitors in 2022, which investigates the impact of precarious work...

05/09/2023: Occupations at Risk for Vector-Borne Diseases

About the webinar:

The incidence of vector-borne diseases spread by ticks and mosquitoes are increasing in the United States. Various occupations, such as agriculture, logging, outdoor recreational, and construction workers, are especially at risk for these diseases. This presentation will describe the primary insect vectors, major diseases they spread, risk factors, and methods to prevent exposure to insect vectors.
