Research Facilities

A major strength of the UC Ergonomics Research & Graduate Training Program are the vast facilities and equipment dedicated to teaching and research including approximately 6,500 square feet of space at the Richmond Field Station, a UC Berkeley Engineering Research Annex approximately six miles from the campus. The UC Ergonomics Laboratory includes:

  • A library/conference room, faculty and student offices with eight computers with Office, MATLAB, and statistical software (R, STATA)

  • Machine shop with drill presses, saws, and welding equipment

  • Laboratory testing space including:

    • Work Physiology & Biomechanics Lab

      • Includes a 3D motion capture system for upper extremity studies (Optotrack), a mobile spiroergometry system for cardiopulmonary analysis (Metamax), treadmill, medical grade heart rate monitors (Actiheart) and ambulatory blood pressure monitors (Spacelabs) for multiday data collection, and accelerometers to measure posture and activity (ActivePal), two Xsens IMU systems for whole body kinematic analysis, 4 GoPro HD Video cameras

    • Human Computer Interaction Lab

      • Includes Leap, Kinect, AR/VR equipment

    • HFE Work Simulation Lab

      • Includes PoLoTAE standardized apparatus for testing exoskeletons, concrete grinding/drilling test apparatuses, space for occupational physical activity assessment, six axis force plate

      • Includes simulated tasks in packaging, warehousing, assembly, cashier, and construction

    • A video analysis room for task analysis and simulation using Multi Video Task Analysis (MVTA), Jack, Santos, and 3DSSPP

    • Sophisticated equipment for field and laboratory testing, including:

      • Electromyography system (Noraxon), electrogoniometers (Noraxon), inclinometers, a vibrometer, force plate, two video analysis systems, an inertial motion capture system (XSens), push, pull, grip and pinch meter, pressure shoe insoles for foot contact pressure analysis

Overview of UCSF-UCB Ergonomics Laboratory Location

From The East

(Fairfield, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Woodland):

• Take Highway I-80 West (towards San Francisco).
• Exit at Carlson Blvd. exit in Richmond.
• Go right at stoplight at the end of the ramp (you're now on Carlson).
• Turn left at the second traffic signal (Bayview).
• The road goes over the freeway and curves right to a stop sign, becoming Meade.
• Go straight at the stop sign.
• Take your second possible left onto S. 47th (1/4 mile).
• Immediately turn right to Richmond Field Station
• Stop at the guard shack (you're now on Robin).
• After the guard shack turn left onto Egret (signs say to the Env. Eng. & Health Sci. Labs - Bldg. 112)
• Straight at the stop sign at Bldg. 175 (Eucalyptus trees to the left of road.)
• Bldg. 163 - the large L-shaped building at the end of the trees across from 112.

From The North

(Marin County, San Rafael, North of Marin on 101):

• Take Highway I-580 East (signs say I- 580 Oakland).
• Continue over Richmond - San Rafael Bridge
• Exit at Regatta (about 5 miles after bridge).
• Go straight at stoplight at the end of the ramp (you're now on Meade).
• Take your first possible right onto S. 47th (1/4 mile).
• Immediately turn right to Richmond Field Station
• Stop at the guard shack (you're now on Robin).
• After the guard shack turn left onto Egret (signs say to the Env. Eng. & Health Sci. Labs - Bldg. 112)

Taking the UC Berkeley Shuttle -

SHUTTLE TEMPORARILY OUT OF SERVICE DUE TO COVID-19

There is a shuttle that leaves from various points at UC Berkeley and drops off at various points at the Berkeley Global Campus.  It takes approximately 20 minutes to get to the lab.  The shuttle costs $1.50 each way students are typically provided with shuttle pass books to help them get to and from the lab.  Shuttle schedules can be found here.  The easiest location to pick up the shuttle from campus is near the Downtown Berkeley BART station on Shattuck near Addison in front of "The Sandwich Zone", at 2117 Shattuck Ave.  Be sure to take the RFS line (Richmond Field Station).  The UC Ergo Lab is the last stop at the station where the shuttle turns around.
